Flower Moon II
Flower Moon II
Dimensions: 30cm x 30cm
Materials: Encaustic on cradled and braced wooden panel
In ‘Flower Moon II’, an Eastern Spinebill feeds on a callistemon bloom as the flower moon rises in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia.
The background in this piece has been created by melting small balls of coloured wax and resin between the encaustic layers. The moon is translucent, created using slightly pearlescent encaustic medium. The bird and flowers have been continuously repainted as each new layer is fused to the layer beneath. The creative process (an adaptation of the ancient Greek art of encaustic painting) is time-consuming and highly technical, but the finished effect is dreamy and ethereal, like moonlight.
This piece does not need to be framed - in fact, the unique encaustic edges are a special feature of the work. The back of the panel is prepared with picture hardware, ready to hang.
