The Velvet Calm (SOLD)

A$1,900.00

“The Velvet Calm” is part of my new Dreamscapes series of encaustic originals, created using the ancient Greek technique of burning layers of beeswax into wooden substrates using a live flame. I used my fine art photography as the inspiration for this piece, which shows a white-cheeked honeyeater perching on a twig at the edge of the Brunswick River, in the moments after the sun has disappeared behind the hills of Byron Shire.

I love the serenity of this piece, which is created by the softness of the twilight and the gentle glow of the reflections on the water. Hot wax can be difficult to work with, but it's worth the effort because it lends itself perfectly to depicting calm water: the sheen from the wax has a water-like quality that is hard to replicate with any other material.

My encaustic originals, which are in private collections around the world, do not need to be framed. The edges are burnished with antique gold as part of the artistic process, and the back is prepped with picture hardware, ready to hang.
